Following our sold-out run in April, Boutcher Theatre is excited to bring "RED" to the Peabody Black Box theatre! Featuring the cast from our original run (Dan Kelly as "Rothko" and Chloe Olwell as his assistant, Ken"), all-new lighting, re-designed staging and props, and plenty of... well... red.
WHAT IS "RED"?
Don't know who Mark Rothko is? Fear not - our show is about much more than the historical figure, but the feelings and fears we all share as humans.
Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New Yorks famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. Raw and provocative, RED is a searing portrait of an artist's ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.
Boutcher Theatre re-imagines John Logan's masterpiece as an immersive experience, bringing Rothko and Ken to life in a compelling and intimate fashion. With set pieces made by the creative team, props sourced from local artists, stunning costumes, and unparalleled performances, this is a show which appeals to artists and non-artists alike.
FEATURING A POST-SHOW TALKBACK
After each performance, audience members are invited to a live talkback with the cast and creative team behind the production. Ask about the show, Mark Rothko, or the creative process behind our production.
